It goes without saying that Taverne Tour is our go-to fest for thawing the wintertime slump. In line with years past, the 7th edition of the Montreal music festival is packed from brim to brim with stellar inter-genre programming, highlighting artists from the city’s local music scene and beyond. On this weekend from February 8th-10th, here is our list of must-see acts from the festival’s lineup. Read along while jamming to our offical Taverne Tour playlist below.

Ben Shemie via Taverne Tour

Montreal’s Ben Shemie—known as lead vocalist and guitarist of art rock outfit SUUNS—moonlights with his experimental solo pursuits. Playing on his classical compositional training, Shemie dabbles in astral string arrangements, frenzied, yet melodic, feedback loops and contorted vocals in his latest avant-pop feat. 

Shemie plays La Sala Rossa Thursday, February 8th.

DahL via Taverne Tour

With their forthcoming album That’s It in the works for March, Montreal’s DahL has perked up our ears with their savvy splicing of trip hop know-how, post-punk textures and arresting flow. The project is the brainchild of Nassir Liselle and Purplefield, who have joined forces with long-time collaborator and producer William Winston on synthesizers and Edward Scrimger on drums for an unparalleled live performance. 

DahL plays La Sala Rossa on Saturday, February 10th.

Daniel Romano’s Outfit via Taverne Tour

Daniel Romano’s Outfit is road tripping once again in anticipation of their next release, Too Hot To Sleep, arriving March 1st on You’ve Changed Records. Sporting power pop sensibility on Too Hot’s first two offerings—“Field of Ruins” and “Chatter”—we’re keen to experience the Welland, Ontario group’s newfound spunk alongside their longtime country flare.

Marie Davidson via Taverne Tour

Reigning queen of Montreal’s clubscape, Marie Davidson, made an impressionable comeback performance at M For Montreal this past fall. The local electronic music producer, singer, songwriter and poet floored the audience with her coy stage presence and enthralling beats. Knowing that we’d accept a taste, but are eager for more, Davidson’s appearance at Taverne Tour is sure to bring the house down.

Pantayo via Taverne Tour

Toronto ensemble Pantayo promises to entrance audiences with its harmonious dialog of kulintang, electronica and indie pop. Combining traditional Filipino music with contemporary influences and experiential sounds, the queer, diasporic Filipinx quintet inspire mesmerizing, powerful and grooving atmospheres through collaborative percussive magic.

Pantayo plays Le Ministère on Friday, February 9th.

Safia Nolin via Taverne Tour

Revered Quebec City singer-songwriter Safia Nolin is a breath of fresh air amidst our heavier Taverne Tour selections. Strumming with tenderness, Nolin’s stilling voice is like a reverie paired with her uncluttered, frank acoustic compositions. Nolin’s recent EP ET SI, DE/main l’oiseau chills with its poignant dexterity — charting fragility and renewal all at once. 

Safia Nolin plays Le Quai des Brumes Thursday, February 8th.

Slash Need via Taverne Tour

Our standing review of Toronto’s Slash Need is that we would gladly let them step on us. The duo’s floorboard-thumbing crossover of industrial punk and performance art is always a treat. For seduction, camp, leather, lace and hounding instrumentals, look no further than this spectacle of daring debauchery.

Sun Entire via Taverne Tour

Sun Entire is a three piece shoegaze outfit made up of Montrealers June Moon, Nico Serrus and Ivan Urueña. Hot on the heels of their debut LP Fit To Break, the band intrigues with their honeyed sound — awash with 90s-tinged, luminous whimsy.

Sun Entire plays L’Escogriffe on Thursday, February 8th.

Sweeping Promises via Taverne Tour

All the way from Lawrence, Kansas, post-punk pair Sweeping Promises charms with their playful take on raw angularity. The band’s 2023 LP Good Living is Coming For You inspires shoulder shimmying from back to front, complete with surfy bass riffs, vintage synths and Devo-esque vocals.

Roost.World via Taverne Tour

Fall into a dark wave rabbit hole at our Taverne Tour co-pro with Burlington, Vermont synth troopers Roost.World. Shake the week’s edge off with the Roost.World’s intergalactic goth rhythms, and introspective sets from special guests Lola 1:2 and Marontate.

Our favourite psychedelic moths are back at it again with DISTORSION > Entrepôt 77. It'll be loud, a ton of fun, and includes Also Cool favourites like Holy Fuck, Hot Garbage, and Petra Glynt. 

The festival runs from July 22th to 24th at Entrepôt 77 (77 rue Bernard), a mythical Montreal landmark located in Plateau Mont-Royal, at the junction of Mile-End and La Petite Patrie.

Ever since the festival's very humble beginnings, the moths organizing DISTORSION have made a point to settle in unique locations to present their psychedelic masses. This year is no different, but there is a slight twist: the event will take place mostly in daylight! Rest assured, though, the moth team has you covered with some of the very best noisy and experimental outfits out there.

Amongst the headliners, attendees can catch transcendent electronic artist Holy Fuck (Toronto, ON), multi-faceted psychedelic collective Golden Dawn Arkestra (Austin, TX), krautrock ensemble Orchestre Tout Puissant Marcel Duchamp (Geneva, CH), plus a selection of up-and-coming post-everything outfits from Montreal and abroad!

Pierre Kwenders by Uproot Andy

If you haven’t already heard of Quebec’s FME (Festival de musique émergente), we’re thrilled to acquaint you. Founded in 2003, FME is an annual music festival held in the beautiful town of Rouyn-Noranda and exclusively highlights independent artists. Our team is grateful to be attending this year’s edition of FME, and leading up to the festival we will be rounding up our list of must-see (and hear!) acts from the 2021 lineup (which is top-tier all around, for the record). Pierre Kwenders by Fanny Viguier

Pierre Kwenders 

Pierre Kwenders is the stage-name of Congolese-Canadian singer-songwriter José Louis Modabi, who is somewhat of a living legend as a Juno-nominated and Polaris-longlisted after-hours king. After immigrating to Canada as a teenager, Kwenders attracted widespread attention for his guest appearance on Radio Radio’s 2012 album Havre de Grace and began releasing his own music shortly thereafter. The Montreal-based musician is celebrated for his music that “is a response to a world that so often asks people who fit comfortably in multiple boxes to pick only one.” Known for rapping and singing in multiple languages (English, French, Lingala and Tshiluba), Kwenders is also recognized for his percussive rhythms that command undeniable danceability. If you find yourself in Montreal, check out Kwenders’ after-hours Moonshine soirées, held every Saturday after the full moon in a location only disclosed via text message the day of the event.

Lido Pimienta by Daniela Murillo

Lido Pimienta 

Another trailblazer on our Top Picks list is Lido Pimienta, the Afro-Indigenous, Colombian-Canadian superstar who dazzles audiences with her artistry, while simultaneously confronting systemic toxicity that permeates society at large. With the 2016 Polaris-Prize win under her belt, Pimienta is known for her mesmerizing poetry, electronic soundscapes that embrace her Afro-Indigenous traditions, and a wholeheartedly punk stage-presence and outlook.  Now based in Toronto, Pimienta also works as a visual artist and curator who explores “the politics of gender, race, motherhood, identity and the construct of the Canadian landscape in the Latin American diaspora and vernacular.” To top it off, she has of the most eye-catching performance attire and visuals we have ever seen. 

Lido Pimienta will be performing at FME on September 2nd, 2021 at 7:00PM EST

Pantayo by Sarah Bodri

Pantayo 

Pantayo’s 2020 self-titled debut is constantly spinning for us. This Canadian queer quintet based in Toronto is made up of members of the Filipino diaspora. Formed in 2012, Pantayo combines of kulintang —an ancient form of Southeast-Asian instrumental percussion using gongs, drums and chimes— with elements of synth-pop, punk and R&B to create infectious rhythms as a basis for their ethereal soundscapes. Named as one of NOW Magazine’s Toronto Indie Musicians to Watch in 2018, their debut LP was shortlisted for the 2020 Polaris Music Prize. The group is perhaps the first ever act to fuse the rippling effect of a gong with pop sensibilities; a feat made clear by their name, which is Tagalog for “for us.”

Crabe

Self-described “présent-punk” duo Crabe are constantly pushing the envelope with their aggressive, experimental sound and work ethic. Known for their energetic, chaotic live performances and a career that spans over the last 15 years, the band has played over 250 shows and are a staple in Quebec’s experimental music roster. Their most recent release Sentients is described by Mothland as “a tribute to out-of-date sounds [due to] the band offloading their traditional rock n’ roll instruments to pursue new avenues of ‘crabisme.’” Possibly making the most noise between two people, Crabe are sure to wake us up from the quarantine haze with their industrial, thrashing expansion on punk’s skeleton.

Crabe will be performing at FME on September 3rd, 2021 at 10:00PM EST
